Happy Birthday Baby In Black!
Astrid was born on May 20, 1938 in Hamburg, Germany. She is a photographer and artist and is most notably known for her association with The Beatles, whom she met in Hamburg in 1960. “It was like a merry-go-round in my head, they looked absolutely astonishing… My whole life changed in a couple of minutes. All I wanted was to be with them and to know them.”
Astrid Kirchherr is still going strong today, saying “But now I am pleased when I see the situation the world is in. I live alone and am very happy.”
The new graphic novel Baby’s in Black by German cartoonist Arne Bellstorf tells the story of original Beatles bassist Stuart Sutcliffe and photographer Astrid Kirchherr courtship in the early days of the Beatles in Hamburg, Germany. Rolling Stone chatted with Bellstorf about the project, and posted an excerpt from the book.
